Sense Motor Shaft Speed and Direction for Closed-Loop Motion Control
OVERVIEW
CONTREX speed sensors can be used to sense the speed or speed and direction of a rotating motor shaft for closed-loop motion control applications. Sensors are available in several different models including 2X Hall Effect, Quadrature, and Magnetic Pickup. Though capable of working in nearly any installation, our speed sensors are specifically designed for easy drop-in installation with CONTREX Ring Kits.

QUADRATURE ENCODER
For positioning or bi-directional applications, the advanced Quadrature Sensor II gives you both motor shaft speed and direction. The Quadrature Sensor II provides two pulse-trains which are 90 degrees out of phase from each other. This phase difference provides direction information to a CONTREX controller. The Quadrature Sensor II technology is more rugged, reliable, and easier to mount than typical optical encoders.

2X HALL EFFECT
For near zero speed applications, the 2X Hall Effect Sensor improves your ability to sense motor shaft speed at very low speeds. Unlike a magnetic pickup, the 2X Hall Effect Sensor is capable of sensing true zero speed while being tolerant of wider gaps. Additionally, the 2X Hall Effect Sensor improves the sensing resolution by 2 times, thus producing a 120 pulse-per-revolution signal when sensing a 60 tooth gear. This additional resolution improves motor speed control a low speeds.

MAGNETIC PICKUP
CONTREX Magnetic Pickup sensors offer cost effective, proven reliability for many motor speed control applications. With no integrated circuitry, these variable-reluctance sensor can withstand very high temperature environments. They are available in multiple housing types depending on your application needs.
